IU Transportation launches new bike registration system

By IU Bloomington Today

July 24, 2025

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable transportation and campus safety, IU Transportation has launched a new free registration system that is required for all bikes and e-scooters on the IU Bloomington campus.

This upgrade is in direct response to feedback and findings from the 2024 IU Bike Theft Survey, which revealed that only 36% of stolen bikes had been registered and only 58% of victims reported the theft. Such gaps limit recovery efforts and make it harder to track patterns and prevent future incidents.

The system is a partnership with Bike Index, the nation’s most widely used nonprofit bike registry, and will allow both the IU Police Department and the Bloomington Police Department to easily access bike data. It also gives IU Parking Enforcement the ability to notify bike owners before moving or impounding a bike.

Owners can also use the system to flag a bike as stolen and connect with a nationwide community dedicated to bike recovery.

With this change, IU joins a growing number of universities using open-access tools that are transparent, accessible and effective.

IU Bloomington is designated a Gold Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists. The award reflects years of investment in bike infrastructure, education campaigns, and commuter programs.
