“The work of the council is vital to the strength of our academic community,” Hojas Carbonell said. “I’m honored to serve in this role and look forward to working with faculty across all schools and departments to promote collaboration and transparency.”

Her appointment follows her recent service as an elected representative to the Bloomington Faculty Council and member of its mediation committee. She takes on this role at a time when IU continues to navigate the changing landscape of higher education and evolving models of faculty governance.

“Virginia’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for faculty governance,” said William Ramos, president of the Bloomington Faculty Council. “Her deep commitment to shared governance and her extensive experience across campus make her exceptionally well-suited to support the BFC in the year ahead.”

Hojas Carbonell most recently served as assistant director of the Basic Spanish Language program and teaching professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the College of Arts and Sciences. She is widely recognized for her innovative approach to pedagogy and service, receiving the inaugural Brancato-Orr Award for Excellence in Teaching and Innovation from the Faculty Academy on Excellence in Teaching in 2025, along with two Trustees Teaching Awards, in 2013 and 2023.

She played a leading role during IU’s pivot to online learning, helping develop online Spanish courses and train faculty in instructional design. A Digital Gardener Fellow and active participant in the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning, including as a faculty advisory board member and faculty liaison, she has long championed pedagogical innovation.

Her extensive university service includes roles on the Faculty Academy on Excellence in Teaching Advisory Committee, College Academic Fairness Committee, the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning’s Faculty Advisory Board, and multiple review and scholarship committees.

A native of Spain, Hojas Carbonell holds degrees from institutions in Spain and the United States, and she speaks Spanish, English and Italian. She is pursuing an Ed.D. in instructional systems technology in the IU School of Education.

As Bloomington Faculty Council director, she plans to focus on fostering communication between faculty and administration and ensuring that faculty voices remain central to institutional decision-making.
