IUPUI receives civic engagement award
IUPUI’s commitment to the community is getting national attention.
The Family, School and Neighborhood Engagement team in the Office of Community Engagement received the 2022 Institute for Educational Leadership Civic Engagement Award. The annual award honors an organization that champions youth, families and/or communities while advocating for equitable public education systems.
The award was presented at the Community Schools and Family Engagement National Conference in Los Angeles.
The IUPUI team earned the honor by continually providing services to support schools, neighborhoods, institutions of higher education and other key stakeholders in implementing community school strategies.
Jim Grim, director of university/community school partnerships in the Department of Family, School and Neighborhood Engagement, nominated the team for the award.
“Recognition of IUPUI’s institutional commitment to community engagement is especially rewarding to come from the Institute for Educational Leadership for our work with school communities,” Grim said. “Like the institute, we believe any meaningful student success gains require addressing the necessary conditions for learning first. That’s what Community Schools does.
“It’s notable that IUPUI is identified as a Midwest center for professional development and technical assistance in university-assisted community schools.”
Penn, UCLA and Binghamton University are among such centers.
The Institute for Educational Leadership also praised IUPUI for playing an integral role in supporting urban schools and revitalizing urban communities through authentic collaboration.
