IU’s University Policy Office is launching a Policy Alignment Initiative, a comprehensive review and update of university policies to improve clarity, ensure consistency and enhance the overall effectiveness of policy governance at IU. The Policy Executive Committee, which includes University Faculty Council co-chairs and university administrators, authorized the initiative.
Background
In February, the IU Board of Trustees approved changes to UA-08, which governs the establishment of university policies. The updates were part of a larger effort to modernize IU’s policy structure and incorporate best practices from peer institutions.
The university’s policy development process ensures consistency and transparency, and the same principles will guide the Policy Alignment Initiative.
The process
The University Policy Office will partner with responsible offices to streamline content and address inconsistencies, redundancies, contradictions or gaps in university policies. The review of academic policies will occur in consultation with the University Faculty Council.
Following the review, policies will be retained, revised, consolidated, replaced, retired or newly developed.
The timeline
Policies will be reviewed in phases, with a target completion date of June 1, 2026.
The University Policy Office is in contact with offices that own policies and will provide tools, templates and guidance throughout the process.
