Indiana University Human Resources continues to build on its commitment to setting clear expectations for staff and leaders at IU while encouraging professional growth and employee engagement.

Those who lead others at IU play a vital role in shaping the employee experience, and successful leaders know that creating strong teams requires relationship building, clear communication, continued development and accountability. IUHR wants to prepare leaders for the challenges of today and tomorrow with Leadership Essentials, a new, required e-learning course designed to clarify the fundamental responsibilities of leaders at IU.

Part of the broader Leading at IU collection of training, the new Leadership Essentials course clearly communicates the skills and behaviors expected of those who lead staff while defining these people leaders’ role in fostering team culture, embodying IU’s values and driving team performance in support of IU’s mission. The training shares how leaders can build a strong team culture, along with best practices and tools that boost team performance.

Course details

• The course is required for all staff employees who lead others and have PAL and PAX salary plans.
• It should take about three hours to complete the course in Canvas, and progress can be saved and resumed as needed.
• Leaders need only complete the training once, but it can be revisited at any time; no renewals are required.
• The course is open to any IU employee who wishes to enroll.
• Academic leaders are not required to complete the course but are welcome to enroll in Canvas.

Leadership Essentials will be available beginning Oct. 29, and people leaders will be automatically enrolled in the training. Reminders about the training will be included in recurring My IU Compliance Notification emails.
