IU’s voluntary insurance plans provide financial protection when you and your family need it most. Whether you’re facing a serious illness or an unforeseen accident, these plans can cushion the financial impact so you can focus on what matters most: your recovery and your loved ones.
Critical illness insurance
A major illness can create expenses that extend far beyond medical bills. Voluntary critical illness insurance from The Standard pays you a lump-sum, tax-free benefit following the diagnosis of one of 20 major illnesses or 21 childhood illnesses such as cancer, heart attack or stroke. There are no rules on how you must spend the funds once they are paid out, so the money can be used for whatever you need most as you recover.
Coverage is available for benefits-eligible employees, medical and optometry residents, spouses, and children through age 25, in the following amounts:
- Employee or resident: $10,000 to $50,000 in $10,000 increments.
- Spouse: $5,000 to $25,000 in $5,000 increments (up to 50% of employee coverage).
- Children: Automatically covered under the employee at 50% of your benefit amount with no additional enrollment or cost.
Additional plan highlights:
- Health screening incentive: You and your covered family members can each receive a $100 cash incentive for completing a preventive health screening during the year, such as a mammogram, blood test or mental health assessment. For employees ages 30 to 39 with $30,000 in coverage, this incentive covers nearly the entire annual cost of your policy for the year.
- Reoccurrence benefit: If you’re re-diagnosed with a covered illness after a treatment-free period, you can receive up to 100% of the original benefit again. You can also receive an additional benefit payout if you are diagnosed with a different and subsequent covered illness.
- Comprehensive coverage: Covers 20 adult conditions and 21 childhood diseases, including heart attack, cancer, cystic fibrosis, Down syndrome and muscular dystrophy.
- No medical questions required: Enrollment is simple, with no health questions or underwriting when you enroll during Open Enrollment.
- Portable coverage: You can keep your plan if you leave IU by paying premiums directly to The Standard.

Supplemental AD&D insurance
An unexpected accident can affect more than just your health; it can impact your family’s financial security. Voluntary supplemental accidental death & dismemberment insurance from The Standard pays an insurance benefit in the event of death, dismemberment or serious injury due to a covered accident that occurs on or off the job, at home, or while traveling.
Coverage is available for benefits-eligible employees, residents, spouses, and children through age 25. You choose between employee-only or family coverage, with benefit amounts ranging from $30,000 to $500,000.
Key benefits include:
- Family security: Spouses and children can be covered for a percentage of the employee benefit.
- No medical questions required: Enrollment is simple, with no health questions or underwriting when you enroll during Open Enrollment.
