IU Today is checking in from time to time with staff and faculty to learn how they have successfully used artificial intelligence tools in their work, research and teaching. We recently caught up with Kristin Martindale, executive administrative specialist to the dean of the Jacobs School of Music, Abra K. Bush.
Question: How have you used AI to accomplish tasks that aid your work/research, and what benefits have you seen?
Additionally, I’ve contributed to presentations and planning documents using lists and slide guides created with the assistance of AI. Through hands-on engagement with generative AI tools, I’ve seen how they can accelerate workflows, surface trends and support thoughtful decision-making. I also used it to help me form my first draft to answer this question. AI is amazing.
Q: What have you learned about using AI that made it easier, more helpful or more targeted for your specific need?
A: That like most things in life, the more you put into something the better the output. Prompt writing is a skill in and of itself. The better you get at writing detailed prompts on what you hope to accomplish with the AI tool you are using, the better the results will be. That AI is a tool, and just like any tool, it’s only helpful if you know how to use it properly.
Q: What is one tip you’d share with a colleague about using AI tools?
A: Be not afraid! And play with it! You’d be amazed at some of the things it can do — and you’ll learn there are still many things it can’t do as well. Embracing the use of AI is just learning another job skill that will make you marketable. With it you will become a more valuable employee, and you may even find you love how it helps you do your job more efficiently.
Note: IU offers a free AI course to staff, faculty, students and alumni to help them understand the tools available and how to use them.
