The Indiana University Board of Trustees approved implementation-focused updates to policy BOT-24, Post-Tenure Faculty Productivity and Annual Review, during its Dec. 5 meeting at IU South Bend.

BOT-24, adopted in June 2025 after considerable input from the University Faculty Council leadership, establishes a university-wide system for annual reviews and post-tenure productivity reviews to comply with state law. At the Dec. 5 meeting, the board approved the proposed revisions to aid and clarify the spring 2026 implementation.

A joint working group from the Academic Leadership Council and the University Faculty Council reviewed and revised the policy and incorporated stakeholder feedback earlier this fall. The updated policy was then posted for a 10-business-day public comment period to allow faculty, staff and students to review the proposed changes and provide input.

As part of the ongoing Policy Alignment Initiative, the Academic Leadership Council-University Faculty Council Policy Working Group will continue its comprehensive review of BOT-24 that will likely address additional items. All comments submitted during the public review have been shared with the group for consideration as their deliberations move forward.

Faculty working groups on every campus have drafted and revised criteria within their schools, colleges and departments, describing performance expectations in teaching, research or creative activity, and service. These criteria will guide annual reviews and will be the foundation of the five-year post-tenure productivity review.

Final criteria will be approved through local governance processes and used beginning with the 2027 annual review cycle covering calendar year 2026.
