Data system for remote work reset as part of 2026 Performance at IU updates

By IU Human Resources

January 21, 2026

Indiana University Human Resources is updating how remote work arrangements are tracked and managed across the university, including setting an annual deadline for remote work arrangements that mirrors existing May 15 Performance at IU deadlines.

To make the change, the Remote Work Arrangement system that documents remote work plans must be reset. A full reset and an updated process allow for better defined expectations and up-to-date data on remote work between leaders, staff and IU.

As part of the Remote Work Arrangement system reset, all previously submitted or approved RWAs were inactivated on Jan. 21. Supervisors and staff with active RWAs were notified via direct email from IUHR.

If approved to work remotely, every fully remote or hybrid staff member must submit a new RWA after their Expectation Conversation with their supervisor and before Performance at IU’s May 15 deadline. Beginning in 2027, all RWAs will have an annual end date of May 15 and must be resubmitted annually as part of the Performance at IU cycle.

Performance at IU is the university’s ongoing performance management program that supports clear, meaningful conversations between staff members and supervisors about expectations, ongoing progress, employee development and annual performance. Recent program updates should allow for a more efficient process that supports shared conversations about work plans and performance.

This standardization of remote work data across the university creates reliable data to make better-informed operational and strategic decisions. Additionally, it encourages conversations between staff and leaders that set everyone up for success.

For staff working remotely

  • NOTE: Keep working as you have been while the new process rolls out.
  • Plan to discuss your remote work expectations with your supervisor during your Expectation Conversation.
  • After your conversation, if you are approved for remote work, you are responsible for submitting your RWA by May 15, 2026.
  • If you work out of state, make sure your work location is correct on the Active Jobs Detail page inside your Employee Center to stay compliant with tax rules.

For supervisors

  • If you supervise staff who work remotely, talk about remote work expectations during your Expectation Conversations, as that discussion will guide what your employee submits for their RWA.
  • If you’ve already completed Performance at IU attestations for this year that included remote workers, you’ll need to revisit those conversations, set clear remote expectations and resubmit the Performance at IU attestation by May 15.

The availability of remote work is determined by senior executive officers (president, vice presidents, chancellors) for their respective campuses or areas of responsibility. Visit the IUHR website for more details about the RWA system reset.
