Indiana University’s University Websites Policy was introduced in August and updated in December 2025 by University Communications and Marketing and University Information Technology Services. The updated policy, which is part of IU’s Digital Strategy Initiative, reinforces the important role that site stewards play in shaping IU’s digital presence.
The policy details new requirements for how to ensure IU websites are accessible, easy to navigate, consistent with university branding, and optimized for search engines and emerging AI tools. It also supports efficiency by reducing duplicate content and encouraging the use of enterprise solutions.
Key policy requirements to be aware of:
- Use IU’s Web Content Management System, or WCMS: This ensures consistency and supports IU’s content and search strategies.
- Maintain accessibility, branding and search performance: All IU websites must follow IU’s brand and content standards. Permission for custom functionality may be requested.
- Be aware that non-WCMS websites require review: All existing or proposed IU websites outside the WCMS require review and approval. Exceptions may be requested.
- Decommission outdated sites: Sites with minimal traffic or outdated content should be removed to protect IU’s search performance. Learn how to retire a site.
