Most people know that health savings account funds can be used to pay for doctor visits, prescriptions and other standard healthcare costs tax-free. But the IRS allows many other qualified expenses that often surprise people.

Below are 15 unexpected ways you may be able to use your HSA funds.

These expenses are eligible with no prior approval:

  • Sunscreen and lip balm with SPF 15 or higher.
  • Acupuncture and chiropractic care for medical conditions.
  • Medical alert bracelets and necklaces.
  • Travel expenses for healthcare such as mileage, parking, tolls and lodging.
  • Ear wax removal and sinus irrigation devices.
  • Menstrual care products like tampons, pads, Thinx underwear and menstrual cups.
  • Fertility treatments such as IVF and artificial insemination.
  • Heating pads, support braces and foam rollers such as the Chirp Wheel.
  • Thermometers, blood pressure monitors, glucometers and smart rings such as Oura or Galaxy.

These expenses are also eligible, but may require a prescription or letter of medical necessity from your doctor:

  • Service or companion animals including the cost to purchase, train and care for a guide dog or other qualified service animal.
  • Acne treatment, including pimple patches, LED devices and acne cleansers.
  • Fitness or activity trackers such as an Apple Watch, Fitbit or step counter.
  • Wigs for hair loss due to a health condition.
  • Vehicle modifications or home improvements to accommodate a disability, such as installing ramps or widening doorways.
  • Lead-based paint removal to treat or prevent lead poisoning.

A few important reminders

  • Expenses must be used primarily to diagnose, treat or prevent health conditions.
  • Cosmetic products and procedures are generally not eligible.
  • Save your receipts in case of an IRS audit.

If you’re eligible for the HSA but not enrolled, you can enroll at any time during the year by submitting an optional benefit change request in the Employee Center. If you’re already enrolled, you can change your contribution amount at any time using the same process.

To get started, log in to the Employee Center and select the “Optional Benefit Changes” tile.

Your HSA is one of the most tax-advantaged accounts available — make sure you’re using it to its full potential.
