Prather to retire; search begins for new general counsel

Vice President and General Counsel Anthony Prather will retire from Indiana University on July 1.

Anthony Tony Prather headshot Anthony “Tony” Prather.Since 2022, Prather has served as legal advisor to the president, the Board of Trustees and senior university administrators. He has also directed the university’s in-house attorneys and outside counsel retained to represent the university’s interests. He has overseen the offices of Civil Rights Compliance, University Compliance and Internal Audit, and held joint oversight of the university chief privacy officer.

“Tony has been a deeply valued member of university leadership over the past four years, providing crucial counsel on numerous initiatives,” IU President Pamela Whitten said. “He has been a trusted advisor to IU and the Board of Trustees and has strengthened our institution in meaningful ways. We thank him for his dedication to Indiana University and wish him a wonderful retirement.”

Before coming to Indiana University, Prather was a partner at Barnes & Thornburg LLP, where he was twice appointed by the Indiana Supreme Court to serve as a member of the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission.

IU Chief Operating Officer Todd Richardson will lead the search for the next general counsel, with a search committee to be named in the coming weeks.
