Kevin Mickey

Kevin J. Mickey is director of professional development and geospatial technologies education at The Polis Center and adjunct associate faculty in the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IU Indianapolis. His focus includes creation of geospatial tools and workflows for managing hazard risk, with emphasis on flood hazards; conducting risk assessments; and developing mitigation plans for multiple communities.

Mickey is a recognized expert in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Hazus-MH natural hazard loss estimation technology and supporting methodology. His experience with Hazus-MH includes multiple hazard modeling projects as well as design and management of more than two dozen courses in flood, earthquake and hurricane risk assessment, disaster operations, and data management.

He has more than 27 years of experience in consulting for multiple U.S. federal agencies including FEMA, the Department of Labor, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Geological Survey, National Library of Medicine, and many state and local government, private-sector, academic and not-for-profit entities. He teaches courses and workshops on a variety of geospatial tools and topics. This includes serving as a lead instructor since 2003 for the FEMA Emergency Management Institute.

Mickey is working on a book, “Geospatial Technologies and Flood Risk Modeling,” to be published by Taylor and Francis Press. It will discuss the past, current and potential future applications of GIS and other geospatial tools for the identification and mitigation of flood risk.

He is a former chairman of the National Institute of Building Sciences Multihazard Mitigation Council, and co-investigator for riverine flood hazard analysis of the institute’s Mitigation Saves project; and former member of the board of directors of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association and the Indiana Geographic Information Council.
