Andrew R. Klein, who has served as interim IUPUI chancellor and executive vice president since March 2022, will assume the role of dean at the Wake Forest University School of Law on July 1. Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch, dean of the Indiana University School of Dentistry, will serve as interim chancellor, effective on the same date.
“I am deeply grateful to Andy for his incredible leadership,” IU President Pamela Whitten said, particularly noting his leadership in Vision 2024, the roadmap that is guiding the transition from what is now IUPUI to Indiana University Indianapolis. “His vision, thoughtful planning and care for our Indianapolis campus community have helped lay the foundation for a new era at IUPUI — soon to be IU Indianapolis — that will be transformative for our campus and for our city.”
Klein previously served as dean of the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law at IUPUI from 2013 to 2020 and as chief of staff in the IUPUI Office of the Chancellor from 2010 to 2013, in addition to his teaching and research focused on tort and environmental law. He thanked the IUPUI community and reflected on recent accomplishments achieved across the campus.
“It has been a pleasure to support the work of President Whitten and the talented faculty and staff of this campus,” Klein said. “Our Indianapolis campus is part of the fabric of the city, and it has been a true privilege to contribute to the growth and success of IUPUI over the past two decades. Our shared success in this past academic year has been especially meaningful, and I will eagerly follow the progress that I know is yet to come.”
In naming Murdoch-Kinch as interim chancellor, Whitten praised her experience and long-standing leadership, noting that she is uniquely prepared to advance the success achieved under Klein’s leadership.
“Carol Anne is the ideal leader to harness the momentum of the past year as we pursue our goal of becoming one of the preeminent urban research universities in the country,” Whitten said. “She brings extensive strategic leadership experience and a strong commitment to enhancing the student experience, as well as our research enterprise. I know that under her leadership, our progress will continue.”
Murdoch-Kinch co-chaired the research task force for the IU 2030 Strategic Plan for IU Indianapolis, led strategic planning for the IU School of Dentistry in her role as dean and serves as professor in the Department of Oral Pathology, Medicine and Radiology. She previously served as associate dean for academic affairs and as the Dr. Walter H. Swartz Professor of Integrated Special Care Dentistry at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.
A national search for the permanent chancellor for IUPUI — the future IU Indianapolis — will begin in August, just before the fall academic term, with the appointment of search committee members.
Please save the date to join in celebrating and bidding farewell to Klein from 4 to 6 p.m. June 26 in the Inlow Hall Auditorium.
