Celebrated classical pianist Jeremy Denk, an Indiana University Jacobs School of Music alumnus and former faculty member, has written a new book, “Every Good Boy Does Fine: A Love Story in Music Lessons.”

The title refers to a mnemonic device taught to children to help them memorize the notes of the treble clef. In the witty, coming-of-age memoir, Denk immerses readers in his passion for classical music, taking them on his journey from young musical prodigy in New Jersey to world-touring pianist and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow.

The NPR series “Fresh Air” and the CBS “Sunday Morning” show recently interviewed Denk regarding his book. The New York Times also featured an interview with Denk in its “By the Book” series in which he spoke about his voracious appetite for reading.

Denk graduated from the Jacobs School in 1993. He was appointed a visiting assistant professor in 1996 and returned as an assistant professor from 1997 to 2003. He has received several prestigious accolades, including the Avery Fisher Prize and Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year award. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2016. Denk recorded the Echo Klassik Award-winning album “French Impressions” with violinist Joshua Bell, a fellow Jacobs School alumnus.
