Make movie magic happen at IU Cinema

September 12, 2022

IU Cinema has re-envisioned its Creative Collaborations programming initiative to create more opportunities for campus and city community members to collaborate on enriching and engaging film-related programs. Applications are now being accepted for 2023-24 programming.

Creative Collaborations is run by IU Cinema and overseen by IU Cinema Managing Director Brittany D. Friesner, with proposals reviewed by IU Cinema leadership and the Creative Collaborations Program Advisory Board. The 18-member board is made up of IU faculty, staff and students, as well as representatives from the Bloomington community.

A cornerstone of IU Cinema’s programming, the Creative Collaborations program fosters diverse programming partnerships that bridge campus and community; highlight critical issues and themes through film-related and educational programs curated in collaboration with IU Cinema and subject-matter experts; and welcome new and returning audiences to IU Cinema. Since opening its doors in January 2011, IU Cinema has partnered with more than 250 campus and community collaborators on over 300 film-related events.

Past Creative Collaborations programs include Paulin Vieyra, Pioneer of African Cinema: Filmmaker, Producer, and Historian (Black Film Center & Archive), Nina Menkes: Cinematic Sorceress of the Self (Writers Guild at Bloomington), and Seahorse, One Trans Man’s Story of Pregnancy and Birth (Department of History).

“After months of recalibrating and re-envisioning, we are excited to reintroduce Creative Collaborations and our Program Advisory Board — now with more opportunities for long-term collaboration and reflection between IU Cinema, our board and our partners,” Friesner said.

Applications for 2023-24 programming are being accepted from any Bloomington community group or nonprofit, and any IU Bloomington academic unit, non-academic unit or student group. Successful proposals will work with IU Cinema staff to bring their programs to life.

The deadline for 2023-24 Creative Collaborations proposals is Thursday, Dec. 1. Detailed program guidelines and the online program application can be found on the Creative Collaborations information page.

“We’ve updated our Program Advisory Board structure to include at-large membership, with multiple positions specifically earmarked for student and Bloomington community members,” Friesner said. “We can’t wait to see what new possibilities these changes bring to our big screen.”

IU faculty, staff and students interested in serving on the Program Advisory Board can apply online through Sept. 19.

Questions on either program should be directed to iucollab@indiana.edu.
