The Indiana University Care Team has worked over the past two years to increase awareness of the care referral process for students and how to support those who may be struggling. The team offers both in-person and virtual presentations for faculty and staff who want to learn how to help.
With the recent opening of the new Student Care and Resource Center, the Care Team staff wanted to educate as many members of the IU community as possible about how to the team supports students and the opportunities for training, said DeeDee Dayhoff, assistant dean for student services and parents in the Division of Student Affairs.
“The training provides us with the opportunity to share what we do, how we function and how we can help so that when faculty and staff encounter a student in need, they know exactly where to refer them for support,” Dayhoff said.
Training, provided at the request of faculty and staff, involves a 15-minute presentation that covers information about the Care Team model; the system of care referrals; when, why and how to make a referral; and the kind of support the Care Team can provide to students. A question-and-answer session follows.
Objectives include:
- How to identify a student in distress
- How to appropriately communicate with someone about whom you are concerned
- Information about how the Care Team functions
- What resources are available to support students
Faculty and staff who would like more information, or to schedule an outreach presentation, can visit the Student Care and Resource Center’s website.
