The North American Academy of the Spanish Language, or La Academia Norteamericana de La Lengua Española, has selected teaching professor Israel F. Herrera in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington.
Herrera was invited to join the academy based on his professional achievements, leadership and contributions to the advancement of the Spanish language in the state of Indiana and in the nation.
Most of his contributions in Indiana happened during his two terms as president of the Indiana Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, president of the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association, executive board member of the Indiana Language Roadmap and as U.S. representative in the Executive Board of the European Association of Spanish Teachers.
La Academia Norteamericana de La Lengua Española was funded in New York City in 1973 and is a corresponding member of the Real Academia Española — the Royal Spanish Academy was created in 1713 and approved by Spanish King Felipe V in 1715 — and a member of the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española, or Association of Academies of the Spanish Language, in Madrid, Spain.
The academy is made up of philologists of the Spanish language who live and work in the United States, including writers, poets, distinguished professors, educators and experts in the language itself. Its mission is to support and promote the study and correct usage of Spanish in the United States of America.
