Committee to lead vice provost for faculty and academic affairs search

By Office of the Provost

March 22, 2023

The position of vice provost for faculty and academic affairs on the Bloomington campus has been posted.

Eliza Pavalko, who served in the role for six years before rejoining the sociology faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences in December, returned in a short-term, acting capacity on Jan. 30, 2023. Her return followed the January passing of Kim Geeslin, who had been named vice provost in December.

An internal search for the new vice provost will be conducted immediately, with a target start date of May 1. Faculty who are interested in applying should review the posting online.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs supports faculty to achieve professional excellence through mentoring, engagement, and an array of opportunities that include participation in National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity programming for junior or mid-career faculty; coordinated campus programming with the Big Ten Academic Alliance Department; a Department Chairs Leadership Series; and the Scholarly Writing Program.

The office supports career paths, sponsors awards and competitions to nurture and recognize excellence, and provides resources for living and working in Bloomington. It also compiles, revises, and makes accessible policies and procedures that regulate academic activities on campus.

Jane McLeod, executive associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and Provost Professor of Sociology, will chair the committee.

The search committee includes representatives of faculty, staff and students at IU Bloomington. In addition to McLeod as chair, members are:

  • Kyle Adams, associate professor and chair of the Department of Music Theory in the Jacobs School of Music.
  • Heather Akou, associate professor and program director of fashion design in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design.
  • Carl M. Briggs, clinical professor of operations and decision technologies; Fettig/Whirlpool Faculty Fellow; and co-director of the Business Operations Consulting Workshop in the Kelley School of Business.
  • Caroline V. Brooks, Ph.D. candidate in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Sociology.
  • Jessica Eaglin, professor of law in the Maurer School of Law.
  • Pamela Jackson, Provost Professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Sociology; associate vice president for faculty and belonging; and founding director of the Center for Research on Race and Ethnicity in Society.
  • Lamara Warren, assistant dean for diversity and inclusion in the Luddy School and vice president of the Bloomington Staff Council.
  • Matt Waller, (ex-officio) senior executive advisor to the provost.
  • Abby Van Alstine Brown, search committee project manager and ex-officio assistant.
