Tree planting among activities to support Arbor Day, IU’s sustainability efforts

Indiana University staff, faculty and students who want to celebrate Arbor Day and support the university’s sustainability efforts can do so in multiple ways with activities on and off the Bloomington campus.

On Arbor Day, April 28, a program about Frederick Law Olmsted, the master designer of public parks and a founder of the field of landscape architecture, will be presented from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Whittenberger Auditorium.

Later that day, a tree planting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. nearby at the north lawn of the Chemistry Building. Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes and attire for working in the dirt. Gloves and tools will be provided.

The tree planting will be conducted rain or shine, unless lightning or severe weather necessitates a postponement. For more information, contact Tristan Johnson with IU Landscaping Services at johnsotb@indiana.edu.

“Trees provide numerous social, economic and environmental benefits, and IU is deeply invested in the continued health and growth of our campus canopies,” said Jessica Davis, interim university director of sustainability. “Arbor Day provides us with an opportunity to celebrate the efforts of our many staff, students and faculty who are dedicated to caring for our trees.”

IU Bloomington’s commitment to effective urban forest management earned the campus its 15th consecutive Tree Campus Higher Education designation. IU has a history of protecting its woodland campuses, as evidenced by its Woodland Campus Initiative. It involves planting trees, caring for current trees, protecting spaces where trees grow and monitoring IU’s woodlots, among other efforts.

Off campus, a community event with the goal of planting at least 100 trees in Bloomington is being coordinated by the Indiana University Student Government Sustainability Committee and an IU employee at RCA Community Park. The planting will take place from noon to 3 p.m. April 29 at the park, 1400 W. RCA Park Drive.

Travis Washington, a residence life coordinator for student development with Residential Programs and Services, said he’s working with the committee to bring the people of Bloomington — residents and IU students, staff and faculty — together and build an environment of positivity. Volunteers must complete a waiver form to participate.
