ICYMI: License plate recognition enforcement has begun

August 21, 2023

Implementation of license plate recognition, a virtual system that uses vehicle license plates as parking permits, has begun on the IU Bloomington campus.

Enforcement of this new technology began last semester. Friendly reminders were given to owners of parked vehicles with outdated vehicle information and/or vehicles not facing the drive lane without a state-issued plate or IU-issued license plate recognition plate on the front bumper.

IU Bloomington Parking Operations is asking for your help minimizing the need for enforcement through the following actions:

  • Ensure your vehicle and license plate information are current in your IU Parking Account, and delete any license plates that are no longer valid.
  • Park so your license plate always faces the drive lane. Do not pull through or back into any parking spaces. The only exception to this rule will be for vehicles with a state-issued plate or IU-issued LPR plate mounted on the front bumper. Parking Operations sells these plates for $14.50.
  • Continue to display a valid parking permit until further notice.
  • Park in areas as designated by your current permit.

Up to five vehicles can be registered on an IU parking account, with only one vehicle permitted to park on campus at a time. To learn more about license plate recognition and to review the FAQs, visit the Office of Parking Operations. Questions can also be directed to askpark@iu.edu.
