‘The Soul Kitchen’ celebrates 10 years on WFIU
January 06, 2025
The Soul Kitchen, WFIU’s Friday afternoon jazz program, will mark its 10th anniversary on the air in January.
The program originally premiered on WFIU on Jan. 9, 2015. Host William Morris said he wanted to create “an upbeat end-of-the-week show built on a foundation of funky jazz, cool R&B, and a pinch here and there of other toe-tapping music from other genres.” Ten years later, the program is a favorite of many WFIU listeners.
To celebrate a decade of The Soul Kitchen, WFIU is hosting a dance party from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at Harmony School on E. 2nd St. The all-ages event will be deejayed by William Morris, featuring a mix of sweet soul, funky grooves and plenty of rhythm.
Guests will have the opportunity to participate in a dance class taught by Charles Sykes, retired executive director and current historian for the African American Arts Institute at Indiana University. Light refreshments will be provided.
The event is free and open to the public, but registration is requested.
The Soul Kitchen dance party is the first event in a series of commemorations to mark WFIU’s 75th anniversary this year.
