Nominations and self-nominations open for Bloomington Faculty Council and committees

February 24, 2025

The Bloomington Faculty Council will open nominations and self-nominations for 2025-27 council seats in late February. Faculty are invited to nominate themselves or nominate a colleague.

Nominated and self-nominated faculty eligible to run within their unit or as at-large representatives will appear on the general-election ballot that goes out to all Bloomington faculty in late March.

The council meets as a full body from 2:30 to 4: 30 p.m. Tuesdays, usually once or twice monthly and up to six meetings per semester. The body plays an important role in facilitating conversations around the latest campus happenings, progress on the campus strategic plan, and academic policy changes and proposals, including promotion and tenure, faculty grievances and the academic calendar.

“Shared governance has and continues to be a central tenet of Indiana University Bloomington. At this pivotal point, we find ourselves navigating the external and internal pressures facing Indiana University Bloomington and higher education, broadly speaking,” Bloomington Faculty President Danielle DeSawal said. “This will require us to come together to examine and recommend how we reinforce the foundation that we have carefully established throughout the history of the institution, as well as identify opportunities to strengthen our shared-governance model.”

Much of the council’s most impactful work takes place in committees. Opportunities to volunteer can be found on the 2025-26 Committee Volunteer Form. The deadline for priority consideration is April 11.

Faculty are invited to express interest in a wide range of standing and elected committees, and they need not serve on the council to join one or more committees. Also:

  • Standing committees meet regularly, often monthly, with relevant administrators to draft policies and check in about pressing issues. Sixteen standing committees are available, with topical foci that include educational policies, research affairs, faculty affairs and technology policy.
  • Faculty can also volunteer to run for elected committees, which serve a highly specialized purpose. Terms for elected committees vary, and election for these committees will take place in late April.

Faculty will be receiving an email from the Bloomington Faculty Council Office that will include a form to submit nominations for the council. Please reach out to the Faculty Council Offices at bfcoff@iu.edu with any questions.
