Virtual conference focuses on analysis, synthesis

September 26, 2021

The Department of History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine is hosting a conference from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, as part of a Sawyer Seminar, a year-long research institute funded by the USA-based Mellon Foundation. The convenors are Bill Newman and Jutta Schickore.

The overall topic for the year is “Rigor: Experimental Control, Analysis, and Synthesis in Historical and Systematic Perspectives.” The fall conference will deal specifically with the history of analysis and synthesis as methods of demonstration in science, mathematics and philosophy, both formally and informally.

More information on the project and the conference is available on the research group website.

The event opens at 4 p.m. Sept. 29 with a public lecture by Friedrich Steinle, whose work on exploratory experiments constitutes a milestone in studies in history and philosophy of science. Find the Zoom link for the lecture by emailing rigor@indiana.edu or through the website.

The conference will take place entirely on Zoom. Participation is free, but attendees should register by emailing rigor@indiana.edu.

Attendance is recommended for those with interests in scientific methodology, experimental design or the history of science, philosophy or mathematics.
