Distinguished Teaching and Service awards honor faculty

Indiana University is recognizing seven faculty members and two graduate students with 2022 Distinguished Teaching and Service awards. The honorees embody the university’s commitment to excellence in teaching and service.
“I continue to be inspired by the dedication and excellence of our faculty across Indiana University,” IU President Pamela Whitten said. “Throughout our campuses, these winners exemplify and further IU’s core mission of putting students first and contributing to the development of communities across Indiana.”

Distinguished Teaching Awards
Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick, Chancellor’s Professor of English in the Department of English in the Division of Liberal Arts at IUPUC, will be awarded the Frederic Bachman Lieber Memorial Award for distinguished teaching. The award, which is the oldest teaching award at IU, is given to faculty members who have shown dedication to helping their students and are also masters of their subject.
Two individuals will be honored with the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching, which recognizes faculty who represent excellence in teaching across the university’s campuses, schools and departments. They are Sarah Heath, associate professor of history in the Department of History, Political Science and Philosophy, in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at IU Kokomo, and Lisa Thomassen, teaching professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington.
Lamia Scherzinger, senior lecturer in the Department of Kinesiology in the School of Health and Human Sciences at IUPUI, will receive the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Technology. The award recognizes faculty who have made distinguished contributions to enhancing the classroom experience with new technologies.
Two individuals will be honored with the Lieber Memorial Associate Instructor Award, which recognizes graduate students with distinguished achievements in teaching. They are Sarah Pedzinksi in the Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington, and Lynnli Wang in the Department of Organ Performance in the Jacobs School of Music at IU Bloomington.
Holly Cusack-McVeigh, associate professor of anthropology and museum studies in the Anthropology Department in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, will receive the Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award. It recognizes faculty members who have distinguished records of advancing students’ civic learning through the integration of community and public service into their teaching.
Distinguished Service Awards
Kara Wools-Kaloustian, Joe and Sarah Ellen Mamlin Professor of Global Health Research in the IU School of Medicine, will receive the John W. Ryan for Distinguished Contributions to International Programs and Studies. The award honors faculty members and librarians from all campuses for their distinguished contributions to the university’s international programs and studies.
Carolyn Calloway-Thomas, professor of African American and African diaspora studies in the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington, will receive the W. George Pinnell Award, which was created by the University Faculty Council to recognize faculty members and librarians who have shown distinguished service to the university, their discipline or their community.
