COVID-19-related leaves ending

As Indiana University adjusts its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is retiring leaves specially created for COVID-19-related absences.

The Keep IU Healthy leave and the IU COVID-19 School and Child Care Leave will sunset on May 1, 2022. These leaves were created by IU as a replacement for the leaves once available through the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.

April 30, 2022, is the last effective day employees may use both leaves.

Beginning May 1, if an employee needs to be absent due to a COVID-19-related illness or child care need:

  • Staff employees, with supervisor approval, may use their accrued time off as permitted by the applicable policy (PTO, vacation and income protection), or be absent without pay.
  • Temporary employees will be off without pay.
  • Academic appointees should contact their campus faculty and academic affairs office.

The IU HR COVID-19 website has been updated to reflect these changes. If you have additional questions or need support, contact askHR at
