The IUPUI Office of Academic Affairs has appointed Teresa Sosa, associate professor of urban teacher education, as its first director of equity education. Sosa previously served as the office’s faculty fellow for diversity and inclusion, working on projects related to faculty hiring, and researching ongoing efforts to recruit and retain a more diverse faculty.
“I am excited to work with Dr. Sosa in this new capacity,” said Gina Sánchez Gibau, associate vice chancellor for faculty diversity and inclusion. “She is an award-winning educator with a depth of research experience. Given her disciplinary training in curriculum and instruction and her passion and commitment to matters of social justice, she will create unique educational opportunities for our faculty and administrators.”
Sosa has more than 14 years of experience in building strong collaborative partnerships centered on advocating, leading and sustaining change. In her new role, Sosa will lead the strategic development, administration and evaluation of equity education efforts that help faculty in processes related to hiring, promotion and tenure, and teaching and mentoring. She will also engage in ongoing scholarly activity related to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education.
“I am honored to be appointed director of equity education,” Sosa said. “This appointment allows me to expand the work I began with Dr. Gibau as a faculty fellow. It also allows me to bring my scholarship, expertise and personal experiences to advance IUPUI’s diversity, equity and inclusion priorities.”
Sosa began her appointment on Aug. 1.
