In its August meeting, the Indiana University Board of Trustees voted to approve a bold new vision for the IUPUI campus. With this approval, IU and Purdue are taking steps to plan for and implement this new vision in which each university will independently govern its own programs.

“This is an historic moment for Indianapolis, for IU, and for our entire state,” IU President Pamela Whitten said. “In addition to expanding our science and technology programs, we plan to grow across the board, create more opportunities for students, and become even more deeply integrated with the Indianapolis community.”

Planned to officially begin with the 2024 academic year, the campus — which will be named Indiana University Indianapolis — looks to become one of the nation’s preeminent urban research universities. Over its 52-year history, IUPUI has become the third largest university campus in Indiana and one of the state’s largest research centers.

“I view today as a celebration of IUPUI’s past achievements as we envision an even greater future built on the foundation of everything that has come before,” IUPUI Interim Chancellor Andrew Klein said. “As we work together to realize this bold new vision, we will remain committed to our core values of creating an accessible, affordable and inclusive campus for students of all backgrounds and one that serves the people of our city and state.”

Work groups will be formed in order for faculty, staff and students to provide meaningful feedback and be a part of the transformation of the IUPUI campus. Additional information will be provided via email to IUPUI students, faculty and staff, and more details can be found on a new website dedicated to planning and implementing this new vision.
