Indiana University Libraries and IU Press are hosting a virtual book launch for “The Impossible Arises: Oscar Reutersvärd and His Contemporaries,” from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 13.

Reutersvärd, a graphic artist known for pioneering 3D drawings, founded the Impossible Figures movement in 1934 by drawing the first impossible triangle.

“The Impossible Arises,” published this year, features images acquired by the Lilly Library in 2014 as part of a collection of over 1,700 pages of letters and drawings. The original documents can be viewed by appointment and request in the Lilly Library Reading Room.

Author Chris Mortensen, professor emeritus in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Adelaide, will give a presentation and be part of a question-and-answer session moderated by Lilly Library Director Joel Silver. Registration is required.

“The Impossible Arises” is part of a special publication series at IU Press, intended to increase the impact of one of the world’s great libraries.

Together with IU Press, the Lilly Library partners with scholars like Mortensen to inspire and support deep research into rare and sometimes unknown primary source materials, and then publish new knowledge for the world to share.
