Clear expectations set you up for success and enhanced engagement

By IU Today

October 07, 2022

As a follow-up to the 2022 My Voice at IU Staff Engagement Survey, units across IU are meeting to discuss their unit’s results and create simple action plans to enhance staff engagement in ways they see fit. In addition to unit-level action plans, IU has committed to addressing staff engagement based on university-wide results.

With the support of President Pamela Whitten and the cabinet, IU wants to ensure that all staff:

  • Have a clear understanding of the expectations of their role.
  • Receive regular feedback on their contributions.
  • Are given opportunities to learn and grow.

Our survey partner, Gallup, gave us a framework based on more than 50 years of engagement research — the Gallup Q12 — to help IU focus both unit-level and university-wide engagement efforts. If you’re participating in action planning, you’re putting this framework into action already.

You can use the information and training opportunities below to learn about setting and receiving expectations at work, a skill represented by Gallup’s Q1. It ties directly to IU’s goal of ensuring that all staff have a clear understanding of the expectations of their role.

Gallup’s Q1: I know what is expected of me at work.

Having clear expectations is the most basic employee need. Knowing what’s expected means that you, as an employee, are clear about what you need to do and when you need to do it.

Role clarity — having a clear understanding of your role — is much more than just a job description or a list of things to do. It’s about you as an IU employee understanding your contributions and value within the team. Employees and managers both play a critical role in ensuring ongoing role clarity; expectations should be continuously revisited, especially in times of change or transition.
