Wylie House to host new holiday event

IU Libraries’ Wylie House Museum is introducing a new tradition to the Bloomington holiday season this year with Garlands and Greenery.

Community members are invited to enjoy festive tours of the historic home of IU’s first president, Andrew Wylie. The house will be decorated with fresh greenery for the winter holidays, and guests will be taken on guided tours by museum staff who will share the history of holidays in the Wylie House and 19th-century Bloomington. The free tours will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 7 to 10.

The Garlands and Greenery festivities will culminate with Family Day from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10. Guests of all ages are invited to enjoy family-friendly crafts, holiday cookies, and musical and singing performances, including Dickensian carolers.

Garlands and Greenery replaces the Wylie By Candlelight celebrations of past years. The holiday open house events were canceled due to COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021. Before the pandemic, Wylie By Candlelight had become so popular that it was difficult for museum staff to accommodate all the guests in a single evening event. Garlands and Greenery offers more opportunities for community members to celebrate the holidays at the museum and allows staff to provide more intimate and in-depth tours to guests.

Wylie House Museum is just off campus at 307 E. Second St. Information about visiting and parking can be found on the museum website.
