New director named at Center for Teaching and Learning
Marie Brown has been selected as director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at IUPUI.
Brown joins IUPUI from the University of Louisville, where she currently serves as associate director for teaching, learning and innovation of the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning, and as interim associate provost for teaching and innovation in the Office of the Executive Vice President and University Provost.
The Center for Teaching and Learning, a partnership among Academic Affairs, University Information Technology Services and University Library, exists solely to assist faculty in pursuit of teaching excellence.
The center offers a variety of programs, events, resources and services designed to foster professional growth and promote evidence-based practices to enhance student learning and create environments in which all students are valued and can succeed.
Brown’s duties will include assisting implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan for faculty development; collaborating with academic units to contribute significantly to the undergraduate education experience; managing the center’s day-to-day operations; and providing vision and leadership to ensure that inclusive practices permeate all programs and methods.
“Dr. Brown brings a great deal of energy and a wealth of experience in teaching and learning to her new role,” said Margie Ferguson, senior associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. “She will be a strong voice for infusing inclusive teaching and learning practices across all disciplines at IUPUI.”
Brown has dedicated her career to researching, supporting and advancing faculty learning and professional development, innovation in college teaching, evaluation of teaching, and intercultural development.
She joined the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Louisville in 2009 as assistant director for teaching and learning and was promoted to associate director for teaching, learning and innovation in 2016.
In 2021, Brown was named interim associate provost for teaching and innovation in the university’s Office of the Executive Vice President and University Provost.
In those roles, her responsibilities included developing and implementing a long-term strategic plan for the expansion of teaching and learning programs; working in partnership with internal stakeholders to manage and oversee more than 50 professionals and an $8 million operating budget; and overseeing the design, coordination and assessment of workshops, institutes, faculty learning communities and the annual university teaching conference.
“I am excited about the opportunity to lead the Center for Teaching and Learning in advancing the teaching and learning mission of IUPUI,” Brown said. “IUPUI has a robust history of teaching excellence, and I look forward to building upon this foundation, especially as it relates to advancing inclusive teaching practices across the disciplines in service to student learning and success.
“The center’s staff and IUPUI faculty have been so warm and welcoming, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Brown earned a Ph.D. in higher education from the University of Michigan, a Master of Arts in education from Ohio State University and a Bachelor of Arts in French from the University of Akron.
Her appointment is effective March 1.
