IU Cinema to host an open house
January 30, 2023
Whether you’re an Indiana University Cinema devotee or you’ve never been to one of its events, IU Cinema is hoping an upcoming open house on Feb. 7 gives attendees a chance to see everything they have to offer.
“A movie theater is inherently a communal space,” Director Alicia Kozma said. “We love sharing what we do, but we also know that sometimes the cinema can seem intimidating or strictly academic, so we want this event to show what we actually are: a haven for anyone and everyone.”
The open house will include a scavenger hunt through the cinema and a look at upcoming films with a reel of trailers on the big screen. If you’ve ever been curious about where the magic of IU Cinema happens, there will also be tours of the high-tech projection booth, which houses state-of-the-art equipment like rare 16mm and 35mm projectors.
“Our booth allows us to give audiences a completely immersive experience, but it’s not a room we usually open to the public, so these tours will definitely be a unique opportunity,” Technical Director Elena Grassia said.
Other activities will include a raffle giveaway, a spot to make your own IU Cinema button, a house DJ and a hot chocolate station. Visitors can also get information about the cinema’s robust volunteer program.
“Our volunteers are so important to the cinema,” said Jessica Davis Tagg, director of events and engagement. “They help run screenings, build the good vibes in the room and so much more. At the same time, volunteers are learning how to run a movie theater, plan events and build community through an arts organization — plus watch all the free movies they want. It’s a win-win, and we can’t do it without them.”
The open house will be a free event from 3 to 6 p.m.
