In support of ongoing efforts to attract, hire, retain and support diverse faculty at IUPUI, the Office of Academic Affairs has created a guidebook on inclusive hiring and an online module on implicit bias.
The Guidebook for Inclusive Academic Appointments at IUPUI provides guidelines for faculty hiring to support the campus’s stipulated values regarding diversity, equity and inclusion.
It includes an overview, conceptual frameworks and step-by-step help for strong, inclusive and successful full-time faculty searches, as well as resources and information on technical steps that must be taken, primarily for human resources staff.
“The guidebook is meant to be the primary resource for members of search committees, deans, department chairs and associate deans,” said Gina Sánchez Gibau, associate vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion.
The online module, Faculty Selection: Minimizing Implicit Bias in Search Committees, is the first of several modules that will be developed toward continued support of IUPUI’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
“This module is intended to help search committees learn about implicit bias and how bias can lead to unfair outcomes in faculty selection as well as evidence-based strategies for reducing the likelihood that such biases affect decision-making,” said Teresa Sosa, director of equity education, who created and is featured in the module.
While the module focuses on faculty selection in the search process, it is recommended to all faculty and school/unit leaders.
Both the guidebook and the module are part of comprehensive educational training opportunities that will continue to be developed by the Office of Academic Affairs in support of faculty development related to inclusive hiring, asset-based teaching and culturally aware mentorship.
