While activity on campus slows down after the spring semester, the surrounding area is bustling this time of year. Several recurring seasonal events will be held within walking distance of campus over the summer, including free workouts, food truck days and farmers markets.
Liven up your lunch break
Kick off the workweek by treating yourself to lunch or a snack on Food Truck Mondays at White River State Park. Two food trucks, one sweet and one savory, will be at the park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through September.
Food trucks will also be part of the Lunch Break Live series on Monument Circle, but music is the main attraction. Live performances will take place on the southwest quadrant of the circle from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Tuesday in May and June.
Get active outside
Group fitness instructors with the National Institute for Fitness & Sport will lead Tabata in the Park Tuesdays and Thursdays through August. The workouts are a high-intensity interval training format. The free sessions will be held from noon to 12:30 p.m. behind the NCAA in White River State Park.
Early birds can catch free yoga classes Wednesdays through Sept. 20. Sunrise on the Canal will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. on the north end of the canal between 10th and 11th streets. Yogis of all skill levels are invited to participate. The classes are presented by the Indianapolis Cultural Trail and Hot Room Yoga.
Shop local
The Original Farmers’ Market at Indianapolis City Market is open from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Oct. 4. Various vendors sell fresh and locally grown produce, meats, cheeses and more.
The Eskenazi Health Farmers’ Market is also back this summer. Items sold are grown or made in Indiana, within 150 miles of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus, to support the local economy. The market will be set up from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Tuesday through Sept. 12, in the Matthew R. Gutwein Commonground in front of the downtown hospital.
