Event to celebrate cancer survivors

National Cancer Survivors Day will be celebrated June 4 at Indiana University Bloomington for the second year in a row. The family-friendly event, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall South Lobby, will feature activities for all ages.

Activities include mini-reiki sessions, music and cancer resource experts from the community. Food concessions will be available, along with complimentary refreshments and sweet treats.

The goal is to bring anyone with a history of cancer together to celebrate, connect and support each other, as well as raise awareness about resources and research for cancer survivors.

The event organizer, IU Athletics assistant director of dining Hope Kaser, is a leukemia survivor herself. The IU event was her idea, and she took the initiative to plan and organize it throughout the year.

“This is something that I am passionate about, and I wanted to see there be more resources for cancer survivors who are employees at IU,” Kaser said.

This event, part of a national event held by the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, is made possible by a collaboration between IU and Cancer Support Community South Central Indiana.

“I started working with Samantha Schaefer from Healthy IU and Katie Tremel from the Cancer Support Community to bring this event to Bloomington; we have been able to host it at athletic facilities on campus,” Kaser said.

Registration is required for the event. Parking will be available directly in front of the south entrance to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
