The resolutions recognize their exceptional service to IU.

During his more than three decades at IU, Cate has been named Distinguished Professor and C. Ben Dutton Professor of Law, and he served as founding director of the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research before becoming vice president for research. Under Cate’s leadership, IU’s research portfolio grew extensively, with more than $732 million in sponsored funding for research, instruction and service in the 2022 fiscal year.

Cate will return to the faculty at the Maurer School of Law in fall 2024. Russell J. Mumper will begin serving as vice president for research July 1.

Gonso, a retired partner at Indianapolis law firm Ice Miller, has served several terms on the IU Board of Trustees for a combined 24 years. He became the youngest person ever elected to the board at 28 and has held leadership positions including vice chair, chair of the student relations committee and chair of multiple presidential search committees. Gonso’s most recent term as a trustee started in 2017 when Gov. Eric Holcomb reappointed him to the board.

Holcomb appointed Binion to serve as student trustee in 2021. Binion earned her Master of Arts in applied communication at IUPUI in 2019 and just completed her Ph.D. in health communication with a minor in medical humanities and health studies at IUPUI. Binion is also an adjunct faculty member in communication studies.

As student trustee, Binion worked closely with student government leaders across all IU campuses to ensure representation of the student voice.

In addition to her service as a trustee, Binion has held several student leadership roles, including president of the IUPUI Graduate and Professional Student Government.

Holcomb recently appointed J. Timothy Morris and Kyle Seibert to the Board of Trustees. Their terms begin July 1.
