Philippa Guthrie will join the Indiana University Foundation as its new executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary, effective Nov. 8. She will be responsible for leading the IU Foundation on all legal matters including tax law, gifts, contracts, real estate and compliance.
“Philippa’s legal expertise in the nonprofit sector and her experience at the IU Foundation make her the ideal candidate to lead the IU Foundation’s general counsel department,” IU Foundation Interim President and CEO J T. Forbes said. “I am enthusiastic about her commitment to diversifying external counsel.”
“I had the privilege of working with Philippa on the board when she previously served in this role,” said Kay Booth, vice chair of the IU Foundation Board of Directors. “Her extensive legal expertise and leadership are wonderful assets to the foundation.”
“I look forward to rejoining the IU Foundation,” Guthrie said. “The commitment of the IU Foundation’s staff, board and volunteers to support Indiana University is inspiring, and I am happy to work with this talented team again.”
Guthrie previously worked as general counsel for the IU Foundation for 16 years before joining the city of Bloomington as corporation counsel. She also worked at Arvin Industries Inc. (now Meritor Inc.) in Columbus, Indiana, as corporate counsel and assistant secretary as well as Ice Miller Donadio & Ryan (now Ice Miller LLP) in Indianapolis as an associate attorney.
Guthrie earned her law degree and a master’s in public administration from IU. She also holds a bachelor’s in history from Dartmouth College. As a Bloomington resident, Guthrie is also active in the local community and serves on several not-for-profit boards, including Cardinal Stage and CanopyBloomington.
