Indiana University President Pamela Whitten was recognized Jan. 13 with the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash. Presented by Chris Lowery, commissioner for the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, the award recognizes Whitten’s distinguished service and transformative leadership at IU, as well as her contributions to the state of Indiana.
Since becoming IU’s 19th president in 2021, Whitten has spearheaded initiatives that have achieved record-breaking enrollments, expanded access to affordable education and strengthened partnerships with local communities.
“Indiana University’s mission includes serving the people of this state, and it has been my privilege to work alongside so many dedicated individuals who make IU such a vital part of Indiana’s future,” Whitten said.
In presenting the honor, Lowery highlighted Whitten’s transformational leadership, noting her focus on student success, research excellence and community engagement. He praised her efforts in expanding degree offerings in high-demand areas such as health sciences and technology, launching global classroom initiatives, and fostering innovation through programs like IU Innovates, which has bolstered student entrepreneurship and post-graduation success.
“Through this work, you have raised the bar for others and set a standard of excellence that has made Indiana University a beacon of progress and opportunity,” Lowery said. “It is a personal privilege to present this award on behalf of Governor Holcomb and a grateful state.”
The Sagamore of the Wabash is one of Indiana’s most prestigious honors, reserved for individuals who have rendered distinguished service to the state.
