Board of Trustees approves updates to university policies process

The Indiana University Board of Trustees voted to update the policy governing the establishment of university policies, UA-08, during its Feb. 20 meeting.

In the fall 2024 semester, IU President Pamela Whitten charged the University Faculty Council co-chairs with leading a policy review task force to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of UA-08. After several months of work, the task force provided the board with recommendations for a policy framework that modernizes IU’s policy structure using best practices from peer institutions.

The new UA-08 creates a Policy Executive Committee to review and approve new or significantly revised university policies. UA-08 provides criteria for the drafting of university policies and creates an approval map for university policy development, revision and retirement. It also describes when policies can be created at the campus and unit-specific levels.

The trustees will continue to approve any policy impacting actions that the board has reserved for itself in the Delegation of Authority, as well as any policy that state or federal law requires be approved by the Board of Trustees.
