Hoosiers will have the chance to test their tornado preparedness when sirens sound for Indiana’s statewide tornado drill next week. The drill, part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, will take place at 10:15 a.m. EDT/9:15 a.m. CDT March 11. Indiana University students, faculty and staff on all campuses are encouraged to participate.
“The statewide tornado drill gives us an opportunity to learn and practice at a time when there is no real threat,” said Amanda Roach, university director of Emergency Management and Continuity. “This test is a great reminder to be prepared and think about how you would respond and stay safe during an actual emergency.”
Emergency Management and Continuity is also hosting a Lunch and Learn webinar at noon EDT March 11 to educate the IU community on preparing for and responding to tornadoes and severe thunderstorms.
When the tornado drill occurs March 11, IU students and employees will receive an IU Notify emergency alert in conjunction with outdoor warning sirens. During the event, anyone on an IU campus should respond as if it were a real situation.
If you’re outside, seek shelter immediately. If you’re indoors, the best places to go are basements, interior hallways on the lower floor or small interior rooms. Stay away from windows and exterior doors, and remain sheltered until the warning expires. The Protect IU website has more information about tornadoes in Indiana and how to stay safe.
