By IU Human Resources

March 26, 2025

Employees and family members taking Indiana University courses this spring have access to reduced tuition costs through the IU tuition benefit. Whether you’re sharpening your skills, pursuing a new degree or supporting your children’s educational goals, this benefit helps make higher education accessible and affordable.

Here’s a breakdown of the benefits available under the plan and who is eligible:

  • For employees, residents and retirees: The benefit covers tuition costs up to a dollar maximum based on the campus of enrollment and degree program.
  • For spouses: The benefit covers tuition costs up to a dollar maximum based on the campus of enrollment.
  • For children under age 24: The benefit covers 50% of tuition costs at the Indiana resident undergraduate rate. This continues until they complete a bachelor’s degree or reach 140 credit hours of tuition benefit awards, whichever comes first.

The IU tuition benefit is available to full-time faculty and staff, medical and optometry residents, and retirees, as well as their spouse and tax dependent children under age 24. Applying for the benefit is quick and easy using the online application:

  • Enroll in IU courses: If the student is new to IU, they must register for courses before applying for the benefit.
  • Submit an online application: Next, fill out the online application form by the semester/term deadline (March 30 for the spring 2025 semester). Separate applications must be submitted for each student and each campus of enrollment.
  • Receive the benefit: Once approved, the tuition benefit will be applied directly to the student’s bursar account after tuition charges have been posted.

Applications can be submitted for up to an entire academic year in advance. However, applications do not automatically renew, meaning you must re-apply each year. If you’re unsure whether you’ve already applied or if you need to make changes to an existing application, contact askhr@iu.edu.
