University Honors and Awards call for nominations

By University Honors and Awards

June 03, 2025

Every year, University Honors and Awards solicits nominations from faculty members for Distinguished Professors, University Teaching Awards and University Service Awards.

With these annual awards, Indiana University recognizes the dedication and hard work of faculty and librarians from all IU campuses.

Nominations are open through 5 p.m. Oct. 2. Honorees will be announced in early spring, and their names will be added to the faculty award plaques in the Indiana Memorial Union.

Distinguished Professor

Distinguished Professor is the most prestigious appointment offered by IU in recognition of outstanding scholarship, artistic or literary distinction, or other achievements that have won significant recognition by peers. This honor serves as an acknowledgement by the university of an IU faculty member’s outstanding accomplishments within their academic discipline.

In recognition of this appointment’s prestige, awardees will receive a formal parchment and an annual salary supplement. If not already a member, those appointed as Distinguished Professor will join the IU Alliance of Distinguished and Titled Professors.

University Service Awards

Faculty and librarians make meaningful contributions on a regular basis to the economic, social, civic and cultural development of Indiana, the nation and the world. University Service Awards recognize outstanding faculty for service excellence that extends beyond campus.

Recipients of the W. George Pinnell Award for Outstanding Service and the John W. Ryan Award for Distinguished Contributions to International Programs and Studies will receive a formal parchment and a one-time salary supplement in recognition of their important work.

University Teaching Awards

IU is fortunate to have many outstanding teachers who demonstrate excellence in a wide range of pedagogical activities. The University Teaching Awards recognize IU faculty and graduate students from all IU campuses who have excelled in classroom engagement, pedagogy and curriculum development.

Recipients of a university teaching award receive a formal parchment and a one-time salary supplement that varies by award. The teaching awards include the Part-Time Teaching Award, Lieber Memorial Associate Instructor Award and the Distinguished Teaching Awards.

New this year for Distinguished Teaching Awards: Self-nomination

This year, self-nominations will be accepted for the distinguished teaching awards listed below. Before submitting a self-nomination, faculty are encouraged to review and submit the Readiness Self-Reflection form.

The distinguished teaching awards are the Frederic Bachman Lieber Memorial Award, Herman Frederic Lieber Memorial Award, President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching, Sylvia E. Bowman Award and Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award.
