Faculty, staff and students who will be on Indiana University’s Bloomington, Indianapolis, Northwest, South Bend and Kokomo campuses this summer may encounter construction projects that will result in some disruptions, including closures.

Here is a look at summer construction projects on the campuses:

IU Bloomington

Willkie Quad area: A chilled water project will begin in early June and continue through mid-August. Rose Avenue will be partially closed for the duration of the project, so drivers and pedestrians should plan alternate routes.

School of Public Health: Construction will continue throughout the summer. The west entrance (Royer Lobby) and the loading dock entrance will remain closed except for construction use. Phase 1 of the project will be completed this summer. Phase 2 will affect the east side of the building and all associated parking.

Indiana Memorial Union elevators: Renovation of the IMU elevators is ongoing. Only one elevator will be in service until the project is completed later this summer.

Campus River: The Campus River Restoration Phase III project began following a preconstruction meeting June 2. As part of this project, temporary fencing will be installed that blocks pedestrian access along the Campus River south of the Neal-Marshall building. Construction vehicles and deliveries will access the site via Seventh Street. This project is expected to be completed by Aug. 15.

Sidewalk and hardscape Improvements: Sidewalk work near several campus buildings may affect foot traffic.

  • Near Biology Hall, sidewalks on the north and south sides will be under construction, which will impact pedestrian routes near the Third Street bus stop. Work in this area is expected to be finished by Aug. 15.
  • From 1411 to 1442 David Baker Aven., sidewalk improvements may disrupt walking paths.
  • Around the IMU and Ernie Pyle loading dock, construction will include sidewalks, bridge structures and nearby masonry features.

Law Lane and Service Building drive: Law Lane, between Eagleson Avenue and Union Street, is undergoing road replacement that started May 27. Temporary lane closures or restrictions may occur through Aug. 1. The south access drive near the Service Building will be repaved during the same period. While no full closures are expected, there may be short-term lane restrictions during paving.

Mellencamp Pavilion: Ongoing HVAC work at the Mellencamp Pavilion will affect Dunn Street traffic. Off-and-on road closures will be necessary as HVAC equipment is placed with cranes from the east side of the building.

IU Indianapolis

IU STEM Lab Building: The STEM Lab Building at Blackford Street and New York Street will be under construction until summer 2026. This project will close the sidewalk along the north side of New York Street throughout the project. There will also be sporadic closures along Blackford Street. Lot 85 along New York Street will not be affected.

James T. Morris Arena: “The Jim” has broken ground, and the foundation is being dug. Throughout the summer, Ohio Street and Wabash Street will be closed when utilities are laid for the new building. Blake Street will be unaffected by the construction and will allow access to the IU Natatorium and Eskenazi Hall during construction.

Center for Young Children parking lot: Planned pavement maintenance will require temporary closures. Work is expected to occur during July.

IU Northwest

Hawthorn Hall: The third and fourth floors will closed to the public for HVAC work. The project is scheduled to be completed Aug. 15.

Hawthorn Student Success Center: The office will be remodeled for a student gathering space on the third floor. Work is scheduled to begin in mid-June, with an anticipated completion date of Oct. 12.

Raintree: A new air handler will be installed on the second floor. The driveway south of Raintree will be closed through June 20 for removal of limestone panels and closed again for installation of an air-handling unit Sept. 9 to 15. Classroom work will be completed before the fall semester starts; the overall project will finish Oct. 7.

IU South Bend

Northside air-handling unit east replacement: The HVAC will be shut down in the theater area and classroom through Aug. 1.

Administration building roof replacement: The southwest parking lot will be closed for material staging. Work is scheduled to start June 16 and be completed by Aug 1.

Administration building handrail installation: A new handrail will be installed on the northside entrance ramp, which will be closed for about one week. Work is scheduled to be completed before Aug 1.

Asphalt paving parking lots: Each lot will be closed during repairs and replacement. Work is scheduled to begin on the northside lot June 6. All lots are scheduled to be completed by Aug. 1:

  • Northside hall north lot.
  • Northside dock area drive.
  • Parkside dock drive.
  • Heritage Civil Rights lot.
  • Police station.

IU Kokomo

A handful of sidewalk repairs will take place around the campus starting July 7, with an anticipated completion of Aug. 15.
