Indiana University will update 26 policies and establish one new policy to comply with state legislation passed earlier this year. The IU Board of Trustees approved the changes at its June 12 meeting.
The policy updates fall into three categories:
- Updating the administrator and/or office responsible for the policy.
- Updating the administrator and/or office responsible for the policy and revising the policy to align with state legislation and best practices.
- Establishing a new policy to align with state legislation and best practices.
Updates related to faculty governance were developed following a review of other universities’ policies and will align IU with a majority of Big Ten peers. IU remains committed to partnering with faculty and consulting with faculty governance organizations to seek input on policy changes moving forward.
The new policy trustees approved focuses on post-tenure faculty productivity and annual review, as required by state law. University Faculty Council co-chairs and campus leaders worked together to draft the framework.
The policy stipulates that tenured faculty members will complete a post-tenure review every five years that measures their productivity in teaching, scholarship and service. Faculty will also participate in annual reviews that include discipline-specific criteria which will be factored into merit and salary decisions.
University Faculty Council and campuses will work together through the fall semester to establish standardized performance rating categories. At the same time, campuses will work with deans to establish working groups that will develop discipline-specific productivity criteria, which will be approved by schools, colleges or departments.
