University Information Technology Services and website administrators continue to address recent website outages across Indiana University.
Here’s a summary of what happened and recent activities:
Background: Several weeks ago, UITS identified security vulnerabilities that required it to shut down IU’s webhosting environment, which was called Sitehost. UITS also locked the WCMS, the university’s web content management system. Due to the vulnerabilities identified, UITS then made the difficult but necessary decision to fully rebuild the university’s web hosting platform.
Continued communication: UITS has been in regular communication with Sitehost group account owners, website owners and employees who work in the university’s content management system to share updates and provide a pathway for websites to be restored within the university’s new environment.
Resources have included updates to the university’s IT Knowledge Base regarding website restoration processes and offering virtual office hours to provide individualized counsel.
By the numbers: The university’s website ecosystem includes more than 2,500 sites. The websites that account for more than 90 percent of the university’s web traffic were restored very quickly. As of this week, 46 percent of WCMS sites have been migrated into IU’s new web hosting environment, and 90 sites have been voluntarily retired.
Next steps: UITS will continue to reach out to affected users about specific updates and technical guidance.
Please contact webhelp@iu.edu if you have specific questions about the website restoration process or unique use cases.
