Request for SJP Heroes Scholar Award pilot project proposals

July 15, 2025

The IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Office of Gift Development is inviting pilot project proposals for the SJP Heroes Scholar Award.

The award is supported by the SJP Heroes Cancer Research Fund, an endowed fund created in honor of three-time cancer patient Susan J. Patrick. The mother of Heroes Foundation co-founder Cindy Todd, Patrick was instrumental in supporting foundation co-founder Vince Todd Jr. during his own battle with cancer.

The funding opportunity, an estimated $10,000 per year over a three-year period, is open to a junior member of the IU School of Medicine’s Hematology/Oncology division who is performing cancer-focused research. Current fellows with faculty position offers accepted in the division are eligible.

The principal investigator must be a junior member of the division and an IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center member at the associate level in a cancer center research program, or an affiliate member at the level of assistant professor, research assistant professor, assistant scientist, associate research professor or research scientist. Current post-docs and residents/fellows are also eligible, provided they will have a full-time faculty appointment and will be an associate or affiliate-level cancer center member at the time of the funding award.

Applicants with prior funding from this mechanism are not eligible to apply.

Interested applicants must submit a Notification of Intent to apply by 5 p.m. Aug. 22 to Vicki Clements via email at cancrfa@iu.edu. The notification must include the name of applicant and all collaborators/team members, and a draft title for proposal.

Notification of Intent can be submitted without IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center membership approval; however, investigators must apply for membership by Oct. 17 and membership must be approved by Dec 15.

A link to the application will be sent to applicants after the Notification of Intent has been approved. Final applications are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 17. The deadline is firm, and no extension will be granted.

Questions can be sent to cancrfa@iu.edu.
