The Indiana University Board of Trustees elected Dr. David Hormuth as its new chair and Marilee Springer as vice chair during its Sept. 11 meeting.
Hormuth, Springer and student Isaac White were appointed as the three newest members of the IU Board of Trustees on July 1 by Indiana Gov. Mike Braun. They were sworn in at the trustees meeting.
“I offer my congratulations to Dr. David Hormuth and Marilee Springer on their election as chair and vice chair of the Indiana University Board of Trustees,” IU President Pamela Whitten said. “Their dedication and leadership will be invaluable as we continue to advance IU’s mission and strategic goals. I look forward to working closely with them as we foster innovation and strengthen our university community together.”
Hormuth earned degrees from the IU School of Optometry, IU School of Medicine and IU Kelley School of Business. He served as a cardiothoracic transplant surgeon at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and most recently was chief quality officer for XVIVO Organ Recovery Service. He is considered a national leader in transplant policy and shepherded the continued success of Indiana’s first cardiac transplant program.
“It is an honor to serve as chair of the Indiana University Board of Trustees,” Hormuth said. “IU’s impact across the state and beyond is profound — from preparing future educators and supporting student entrepreneurs to advancing life sciences research and strengthening Indiana’s workforce.
“As we move forward with the IU 2030 strategic plan, I’m inspired by the university’s commitment to excellence, innovation and service. I look forward to working with my fellow trustees, President Whitten and the IU community to build on this momentum.”
Springer, a first-generation college graduate, earned her law degree from the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law. She is a partner at Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP and represents nonprofits and quasi-governmental entities, with a focus on corporate, governance and tax issues. She has worked on policies impacting K-12 education, higher education and the adult workforce.
White is a first-generation honors student at the IU Kelley School of Business in Indianapolis, where he is pursuing degrees in finance, real estate and economics. He is expected to graduate in May 2027.
The board chair presides over all trustees meetings; names and identifies the duties and responsibilities of all committees; and fills committee vacancies. The vice chair supports the chair in governance activities and performs his duties in the chair’s absence. Officers serve for two-year terms, and student trustees serve one-year terms.
