The Indiana University student trustee helps shape the university’s future, and applications for the position are now open.

IU’s student trustee is a full member of the IU Board of Trustees and has the same rights and responsibilities as the other trustees.

While students can decide on their own whether to apply, students, faculty or staff are encouraged to nominate a student they think should consider the role.

The student trustee works closely with IU’s leadership and has a multitude of duties:

  • Participate in six board meetings annually.
  • Serve on board committees.
  • Complete projects.
  • Participate in university functions and ceremonies.
  • Work with the All University Student Association.

The position is for one year. Interested students must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student at any IU campus and have enough time for all the responsibilities of the role. Full-time student status must be maintained through the term.

Applications, which can be submitted online or by mail, involve personal statements, a resume and at least one letter of recommendation.

The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. EST Jan. 12. Interviews will take place March 6 and 7. The names of 10 finalists will be forwarded to the governor, who will make the appointment. The term begins July 1, 2026, and ends June 30, 2027.
