Kinesiology students lead Exercise Is Medicine On Campus

By IU Indianapolis Today

July 19, 2024

Exercise Is Medicine On Campus is a global initiative to promote physical activity as a vital sign of health on college campuses. The goal is to foster relationships to create a culture of physical activity and chronic disease prevention campus-wide.

As part of the initiative, students studying exercise science in the IU School of Health and Human Sciences at IU Indianapolis are promoting places and opportunities to be active on campus, like in the recreation gym, in an outdoor fitness garden or through the Office of Health and Wellness Promotion’s physical activity challenges.

Students also offer presentations for individuals to learn about the benefits of exercise and how to progress in the gym. These students are overseen by the school’s faculty and staff, which helps ensure all information is accurate and valid.

The Exercise Is Medicine On Campus group will work with other student organizations to help incorporate physical activity opportunities, weightlifting demonstrations and workshops, and to answer questions. The program advisor is working to connect with Campus Health and the IU School of Medicine to educate current and future health care professionals about why they should incorporate physical activity as a vital sign in their patients.
